Charitable Funding Guidelines

Each grant and project we fund must have the greatest possible impact on improved health for individuals in our community.

What we will consider funding:

Charitable organizations determined by the Internal Revenue Service to be tax exempt under Section 501 (c)(3) of the Code, that are located in, or providing services to one or more of the following communities: Montclair, Glen Ridge, Essex Fells, Verona, Cedar Grove, Clifton, Bloomfield, Little Falls, Nutley, Roseland, Fairfield, Caldwell, West Caldwell, North Caldwell and West Orange.

The following areas of health improvement have special interest to the Foundation:

  • Improving access to healthcare

  • Mental Health

  • Obesity / Nutrition / Healthy Lifestyle

  • Seniors / Aging in the Community

Projects that include direct service provision, prevention education, and/or community education.

Demonstration projects (designed to be replicated by other charitable service providers); pilot projects (which may result in new and better ways in which to provide charitable services); and collaborative projects between two or more organizations.

Research studies and capital needs directly tied to charitable projects in the Foundation's areas of interest listed above.

Renewal grants for two years following the initial grant, as deemed appropriate.  Thereafter, the Foundation expects the organization to continue the project with funds from other sources or to absorb it into its operating budget.

Other:

  • Periodically, the Foundation may announce funding initiatives, possibly in conjunction with other charitable funding organizations.  In these cases, the Foundation will publish a Request for Proposal with specific guidelines and deadlines.

  • The Foundation will also occasionally make Challenge Grants, whereby the recipient charitable organization will be required to raise funds from other sources in order to receive a matching gift from Mountainside Health Foundation.

What we will not fund:

  • Annual Funds or general operating expenses

  • Lobbying or political causes

  • Religious activities and/or organizations that limit their services to any one religious group or members of a specific sectarian perspective

  • Organizations that illegally discriminate on the basis of race, gender, sexual orientation, creed, age or national origin

  • Debt service

  • Tickets to events

  • Individuals (excepting IRS approved charitable scholarships)
