Having an ImPACT
Every year, thousands of student-athletes sustain concussions that may
cause permanent damage to the brain. The hard part for their health
care providers, parents and coaches is determining when it's safe for
the student to return to play.
The Mountainside Health Foundation and the
Brain Injury Association of New Jersey
are partnering to use technology and education to prevent such tragedies
in youth sports. Local high schools will have the opportunity to obtain
a computerized concussion management software, called ImPACT. The
student initially takes a test to determine a baseline score of
cognitive function. Following an incident the student retakes the test,
which measures reliable changes in the baseline score. The test is
repeated at intervals until the scores return to baseline levels.
Training on the use of the software will be provided, and educational
materials will be distributed to parents to raise their awareness of the
seriousness of brain injury.
Proceeds from the 2009 Annual Golf Tournament will fund this program.
Your support will help ensure that students don’t return to the playing
field before they are ready.
