Partnering to Prevent the Spread of the Flu

The Mountainside Health Foundation is working in partnership with the
Montclair Health Department on an H1N1 Flu Prevention and Health
Promotion Campaign. Because keeping hands clean is one of the most
important ways to prevent the spread of infection and illness, the
Foundation has allocated funds to purchase hand sanitizer dispensers
for 57 schools in Montclair, Nutley, Glen Ridge, Verona and Cedar Grove.
Educational posters and promotional materials will also be printed and
placed next to each dispenser.

The Mountainside Health Foundation is also funding “Protection Now,”
in partnership with the Bloomfield Department of Health and Human
Services. This flu prevention campaign will raise awareness about how
the flu virus is spread, and will target at-risk groups including children
and college students, in Bloomfield and Caldwell.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recognizes health foundations as partners in the nationwide flu prevention efforts. As a result,
the Mountainside Health Foundation is pleased to disseminate facts about flu prevention and management through updates provided
to us by the CDC. Visit these links for the CDC’s most recent “Flu Updates”:

Keeping hands clean is one of the most important ways to prevent the spread of infection and illness.
• Wash your hands often with soap and warm water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Wash for 15 – 20 seconds.
    • Read more about proper techniques for hand washing at "Healthy You", and www.cdc.gov/features/handhygiene
• Alcohol-based hand wipes or gel sanitizers are also effective.

These everyday steps can help you to protect your health during the flu season:
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
• Avoid contact with sick people.

If you get sick:
• Stay home if you are sick for 7 days after your symptoms begin or until you’ve been fever-free for 24 hours, whichever is longer.
• If you are sick, limit your contact with other people as much as possible.

If you become ill and experience any of the following warning signs, seek emergency medical care:

In children emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:
• Fast breathing or trouble breathing
• Bluish or gray skin color
• Not drinking enough fluids
• Severe or persistent vomiting
• Not waking up or not interacting
• Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
• Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough

In adults, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:
• Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
• Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
• Sudden dizziness
• Confusion
• Severe or persistent vomiting
• Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough

If someone around you appears to be sick:
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth and any surfaces the sick person touches until you have a chance to wash your hands.

If you are living with someone who has the H1N1 flu:
• Care for yourself by wearing a mask or a protective cloth over your mouth and nose.
• Washing your hands frequently.
• Don’t share dishes, towels or bed sheets with the sick person.
• Learn more about taking care of a sick person in your home at www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/guidance_homecare.htm
